The Inflation Busting Pig

Happy Pigs at Langton Farm Shop

No, not a comment about a successful Chancellor of the Exchequer! Instead, the news from the BBC that food inflation is up a record 13.7% in the past year with reports from The Morning Advertiser that the rate for meat and bread is around 16%.

This gives even more reason to try and save on food costs, and what better than if you can do this and also eat better food. Ignore the advice to buy cheaper Supermarket brands and make your own.

The half pig I bought recently has been processed and at a conservative estimate has saved me & my family £63 on Supermarket prices, that's a massive 41% saving.

So what has it made?

  • Fresh Joints - Loin, Leg and Fillet - 11lb
  • Sausage - Fresh, Frankfurters and Pepperoni - 12½lb
  • Bacon - Dry Cure Back and Dry Cure Smoked Streaky - 10¼lb
  • Premium Ham - 6½lb
  • Faggots/Pâté - at least 40 portions
  • Plus hocks, trotters, stock etc.
Ham

I couldn't believe it when I checked the supermarket price of good ham, some of their comparable ham is over £20 per kilo, and that's at one that prides itself on being cheap!

For bread you can still make a standard 800g loaf from Organic Locally Milled flour for as little as 63p plus fuel. Use Supermarket flour and this drops as low as 23p.

Soft rolls

You could, of course, make these soft rolls - ideal for putting all that cured meat in.
